Words cannot describe how happy I am to finally get the chance to review a Canadian sex zine. The Moose and Pussy is done by an Ottawa collective of college students from Carleton. That this is a student-run zine is obvious, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The content is largely focused on youthful insecurities, singles sex, and the tragicomedy of co-ed schooling. It’s not hard to see how this could lead to good sex writing. When it doesn’t focus on these themes, the view is of the art scene, and all of the topic covered are treated with wit and sly self-awareness. Hell, even the poetry is good – well-written, thoroughly thought out and genuinely interesting. Having set the reader up with all these tasty things to read, The Moose will then introduce darker pieces into the mix, and these will catch you off guard. This adds to their resonance and makes them more memorable, which speaks volumes about the intelligence of this crew. The overall artiness of The Moose and Pussy may make readers feel like they are experiencing endless foreplay, but if the goal is to artfully titillate, then it succeeds.

The definition of “erotica” has been recycled more times than a cum rag. It’s been cleaned up and academicized to appease prudes, romanticized to placate suburbanites and disguised to mean anything that’s not porn. That’s why you’ll love Ottawa’s newest erotica magazine, Moose & Pussy – straight-up dirty writing, and editor Jeff Blackman doesn’t care what genre you call it.

“Some say erotica means softcore and porn means hardcore,” Blackman tells XPress. “It’s labels for the same thing, and I don’t think too much about it.”

Blackman and fellow Carleton University editors Kate Maxfield, Jeremy Hanson-Finger and Rachael Simpson have one goal in mind with their debut 20-page issue: “Turn people on to good art through good sex.”

In September something sexy will hit Ottawa newsstands.

A new magazine published by Carleton students and alumni, the Moose & Pussy, will feature erotic poetry and short stories and invite students and locals to submit their own erotic literature.

The magazine will be available on campus and at specialty magazine retailers throughout the city.

The magazine is the contrivance of Jeff Blackman, Kate Maxfield, Jeremy Hanson and Rachael Simpson.

They said the idea grew from a conversation between Blackman and Maxfield as they considered the lack of a euphemism for the male sex organ. more
